Top Fly Fishing Trips in Yellowstone Country
We offer a wide range of trips on waters centered on our headquarters in Livingston, Montana, and have guides based in Livingston, Bozeman, and beyond. Every trip type may be customized for anglers of any skill level. Here are just a few of our specialties:
River Float Trips
Enjoy rough and rowdy Yankee Jim Canyon or scenic and mellow Paradise Valley on the Yellowstone River, learn the secrets of the lower Madison River near Bozeman, or get sneaky on a lesser-known river like the Boulder.
Available late March through early November.
Walk & Wade Trips
Hike into lightly-traveled waters in America’s first national park. From tiny mountain trickles to famous names like the Lamar River, Yellowstone Park wade trips offer a huge range of experiences… and our owner and head guide has 25 years of experience guiding there.
Available year-round, though you have to be sturdy to fish in the winter!
Private Water Trips
From the famous Paradise Valley spring creeks to prairie ranch reservoirs, our private water trips offer uncrowded conditions and large (but seldom easy) trout, and are often at their best when some other opportunities are not at their best.
Spring creeks are available year-round. Private lakes are available from late April through June and in the fall.

What Our Clients Have to Say

If you are planning to fish the great trout rivers around the Livingston region Walter is your man. And if you do, tell him Bud and Dave say thanks!

Also, we had bad weather/water conditions on the scheduled day but were able to reschedule for another day on our trip, which made us very happy!
Overall, great day on the river. Would definitely recommend booking with him.

The whole experience was excellent from start to finish and made for a very memorable day. I would definitely book another trip with Yellowstone Country Fly FIshing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Fishing tackle is included, but you are also welcome to bring your own. Flies are also included, including many custom fly patterns our guides have developed specifically for local waters. Do you like to tie your own? No problem. We'll let you know what to tie, and you can check out our YouTube fly tying tutorials to learn how to tie some of our specialties.
We do not supply wading gear. It is not needed on our most popular trips, and may be rented from local shops if required.
We guide year-round, though there’s only a handful of options (and it gets awfully cold) in the dead of winter. Otherwise, certain fisheries and tactics are best at specific times of year. Feel free to give us a call or send an e-mail to discuss the best options during your travel dates, or for information on when the to come will to match your goals and interests.
One guide can handle one or two guests, whether we’re fishing on foot or from a boat. We have six guides on staff, but limit operations to five parties daily to preserve our standards of personalized service. This means we can handle ten people daily with sufficient lead time.
We prefer to limit ourselves to three guides per river section on boat trips and are limited by law to two parties per spot on wade trips, so large groups will need to split up to fish different areas. Private waters may also have limited availability.
Lots! Our home base in Livingston is right in the middle of the Yellowstone River’s blue ribbon section (100+ miles), so the ‘Stone is our home water, but we’re within a reasonable drive of six other float rivers, many private-access fisheries, and the northern half of Yellowstone Park—the largest expanse of public wade-fishing trout water in the United States.
We guide all of this huge variety of waters, so in peak season it’s possible for us to take you fishing for weeks without repeating ourselves.
Absolutely! About a quarter of our clients have never fly fished before.
There are good beginner options all year, though late May or early June through early October is best. Options are available for clients of almost any fitness, and we take clients ages 10 and up (12+ from mid-October through mid-April).
No. We’re a home-based business. That keeps us small and flexible, and allows our owner, outfitter, and head guide Walter Wiese to get out on the water with clients most days instead of sitting in an office.
Licenses may be purchased online. If you need wading gear, clothing, or flies and tackle for the days you’re not fishing with us, we’ll send you to one of the local fly shops we trust.
Absolutely. While we don't include lodging in any of our rates, we have some preferred hotels and campgrounds that work best for our clients. Give us a call and we'll give you our recommendations based on your budget, timeframe, and fishing goals. We'd also be happy to help with other travel planning.
