Weekly Fly Tying Tutorial – Olive Zonker
Posted on November 11th, 2024 in Fly Tying Tutorials, Fly Tying Videos
The Olive Zonker is a class rabbit fur streamer pattern that has fallen out of use a bit in the past twenty or so years. That said, it’s still a very effective pattern. This tutorial teaches how to tie the best version for Yellowstone Country: a gold body, an underbody designed to invert the fly for less snags, and an olive wing. Two methods of constructing the body are presented in the video, a lightweight version and a heavy version. The basic recipe given here can be used to tie the fly in whatever colors you like.

Weekly Fly Tying Tutorial – Skinny Timmy BWO
Posted on November 3rd, 2024 in Fly Tying Tutorials, Fly Tying Videos
The Skinny Timmy BWO uses Charlie Craven’s “Timmy” winging technique with a slender thread body, resulting in a delicate mayfly cripple or drowned dun pattern that floats low in the film while being visible and buoyant. The basic template can be tied in any color and tied as large as size-8 and as small as size-24. Try tweaking the pattern with different body materials that preserve the slim profile, especially in larger sizes.

Fly Tying Tutorial of the Week – Midge Body Baetis Nymph
Posted on October 27th, 2024 in Fly Tying Tutorials, Fly Tying Videos
The Midge Body Baetis Nymph is representative of a simple, quick-to-tie, durable mayfly nymph I like. Somewhat resembling a WD-40, it uses Montana Fly Company’s Midge Body Thread for its abdomen, and in some cases even its tying thread. This pattern is best in #16–18 and can be tied in whatever colors you like: the golden-olive with a black rib here imitates Baetis, rust brown with a brown rib imitates PMD, red, black, purple, etc.
